ITT Partner Receives Distinguished USGIF Award for Work on U.S. Air Force’s Gorgon Stare Program

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 18 2011 – The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) has selected the Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC)-led Gorgon Stare team as its 2011 Industry Achievement Award recipient. ITT's Wide Area Airborne Surveillance (WAAS) day/night sensor payload system is a key element of the Gorgon Stare program.

Each year, the USGIF recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the geospatial intelligence tradecraft by an individual or industry team.

“ITT congratulates SNC on receiving this prestigious award for the exceptional work it has accomplished on the Gorgon Stare program,” stated S. Danny Rajan, director, Geospatial Information Solutions, ITT Geospatial Systems. “ITT is proud to be part of this best-of-breed industry team on a program that will enable our warfighters to persistently monitor and effectively integrate tactical battlefield imagery into their critical operations.”

The 2011 award was presented to SNC and the Gorgon Stare team Tuesday at this week’s GEOINT 2011 Symposium in San Antonio, Texas.

In August of this year, ITT announced that its WAAS multiple electro-optical infrared sensor system had been deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This system enables the Gorgon Stare program to deliver real-time, wide-area, day and night, high-resolution motion imagery that can be disseminated, stored, and accessed across existing networks, including both hand-held devices and workstations.

Gorgon Stare is hosted on an MQ-9 Reaper. Each orbit provides uninterrupted, 24/7 visible and infrared coverage of city-sized areas, giving real-time motion video directly to theater and tactical forces engaged in combat and support operations.

As SNC continues to lead the Gorgon Stare team into the next program phase (Increment 2), ITT is supporting the effort through development of a next-generation infrared sensor. It will provide increased imaging performance to find smaller targets over a larger area, which will ultimately enable faster and more accurate image exploitation and decision-making.
