Mentor Graphics Embedded Linux Technology Powers Network Functions Virtualization Solution on AMD 64-bit ARM SoC

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 1, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —  ARM TECH CON -- Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced the embedded industry's first technical implementation of a network functions virtualization (NFV) solution on a 64-bit ARM® processor with AMD. AMD provides the underlying processor hardware for telecommunications and networking infrastructure solutions, and recognizes the importance of an efficient NFV solution. Thus, AMD engaged Mentor Graphics for its Linux and tools expertise, and Aricent for their networking software solution, to build a platform for today's most demanding networking customers.

The AMD Embedded R-Series 64-bit ARM-based multicore system-on-chip (SoC) codenamed "Hierofalcon," including the Mentor® Embedded Linux® technology and Mentor Graphics® Sourcery™ CodeBench tools, and the Aricent network software stack, comprise a NFV platform on the newest high-performance 64-bit ARM architecture. This solution will be demonstrated in the AMD booth #613 at the ARM Tech Con in Santa Clara, California.

"Mentor Graphics is a key software partner for AMD Embedded, and our demonstration of a NFV solution on ARM will help advance the development of telecommunications and network infrastructure products," stated Dilip Ramachandran, senior director of marketing, communications infrastructure solutions, AMD Embedded Business Unit. "The increasing growth in Linux-based applications, and the advanced power and performance of AMD 64-bit ARM processors will help enable our customers to rapidly develop products and introduce new services with improved productivity and reduced costs."

The Industry's First Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) Solution on 64-bit ARM
NFV is a network architecture concept based on virtualizing classes of network node functions into building blocks. These blocks can be inter-connected to create communications services, but this process is complicated and requires long development cycles, must adhere to industry standards for quality and performance, and relies on expertise of hardware and software specialists. AMD is demonstrating the world's first NFV solution powered by a 64-bit ARM based processor, including traffic between ARM and x86 architectures.

In addition to the Mentor Embedded Linux technology, the Sourcery CodeBench suite of developer tools from Mentor Graphics can help embedded systems engineers gain valuable insights into system behavior and timing through a visual debugging framework that identifies functional, timing, and performance bottlenecks. This NFV platform solution enables networking and telecommunications OEMs to rapidly develop and deploy Linux-based applications with minimized risks, greater productivity, and faster time-to-market.

"The NFV solution provided by AMD, Aricent, and Mentor for advanced ARM processors will be particularly attractive to telecom and networking OEMs, particularly those seeking reliable Linux-based applications," stated Scot Morrison, general manager, embedded runtime solutions, Mentor Graphics Embedded Systems Division. "Our mission is to deliver trusted, integrated solutions to ease the complexities of embedded systems development, and our proof of concept NFV demo will be showcased at ARM Tech Con. We are proud of this achievement with AMD, which helps our customers realize greater productivity and technology innovation."

ARM Tech Con NFV Showcase
The NFV environment powered by AMD's 64-bit ARM-based "Hierofalcon" SoC will be featured at the AMD booth #613 on October 1-2, 2014 at the ARM Tech Con.
