Michigan Department of Transportation to Use Bentley Subsurface Utility Engineering to Manage and Model Underground Utilities

November 3, 2014

Bentley Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) offers breakthrough technology for the integrated engineering management of underground utility networks for water, stormwater, gas, and electric services. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is preparing to use Bentley SUE to help bring together data from multiple sources and geo-coordinates it for 3D modeling, interactive inspection, and utility conflict detection and clash resolution.

MDOT’s engineering group is convinced that 3D modeling software is the way of the future for utility design and analysis. The department is planning to take advantage of SUE’s two major capabilities of being able to synchronize with geospatial databases and run clash detections. MDOT believes that Bentley SUE will play a significant role in the department's efforts to manage and model underground utilities.

Taylor Snow, transportation engineer with MDOT, said, “SUE is very robust in its ability to analyze utilities in order to take the ‘educated guessing’ out of engineers’ design decisions.”
