BroadLight Increases Network Processor Frequency by 30 Percent Using New Cadence Encounter Digital Implementation System

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 11, 2009 -- Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDNS), the leader in global electronic design innovation, today announced that BroadLight, a leading supplier of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) semiconductors, has standardized on the new Cadence® Encounter® Digital Implementation System for the design of its GPON devices. BroadLight was able to better its frequency requirement for its most advanced network processor family while reducing power consumption by more than 20 percent and achieving challenging die-size constraints. Through rigorous benchmarking and stress-testing, Encounter Digital Implementation System proved the most capable RTL-to-GDSII digital design and signoff solution for BroadLight's highly integrated GPON devices.

"Extending our competitive differentiation in cost, power, and performance to our leading GPON solutions required unique design expertise and a highly capable design solution," said Igor Elkanovich, vice president of VLSI for BroadLight. "Our team was able to quickly adopt and ramp the Cadence Encounter Digital Implementation System into our production flow to improve our network processor frequency by 30 percent while reducing overall power by 20 percent. We achieved these design targets more efficiently and with better performance, die size and time to market than ever before."

Encounter Digital Implementation (EDI) System is a configurable and extensible high-performance, high-capacity, scalable design solution delivering flat and hierarchical design closure and signoff analysis, along with low-power, advanced-node, and mixed-signal design capabilities, in a single integrated environment. The system also delivers interoperability and co-design with package, logic, and custom IC implementation and signoff. Cadence design-for-manufacturing (DFM) technologies are an integral part of the EDI System, enabling early identification, analysis and repair of yield-limiting design elements present at advanced nodes.

"BroadLight's decision to migrate from a competitive offering to Encounter Digital Implementation System is another example of why innovative companies turn to Cadence Encounter technology to achieve differentiated results for their designs," said Chi-Ping Hsu, senior vice president of implementation R&D at Cadence. "By adopting the full EDI System RTL-to-GDSII and signoff solution for their state-of-the-art GPON processors, BroadLight achieved results similar to what we've seen elsewhere: better designs and faster time to market."
