Innoveda Develops First Schematic-Free PCB Design Technology

HDL2PCB Solution Dramatically Shortens Product Development Time, Reduces Risks

MARLBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 2002--Innoveda, Inc. (Nasdaq: INOV - news), a leading provider of innovative software and services for the design of advanced electronic products, today announced HDL2PCB, the industry's first schematic-free HDL-to-PCB design technology, designed to dramatically shorten the development cycle for complex printed circuit boards (PCBs). This unique, vendor-independent, language-based design methodology provides easy access to HDL (hardware design language) simulation and verification, and a tight connection to system-level design, reducing the product release risks involved with integrating large, complex devices on a PCB. Innoveda will demonstrate its HDL2PCB technology at DesignCon 2002, Booth #215, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, Calif., Jan. 29-30.

Faster Design, Less Risk

According to Isaac Achler, director of R&D at San Jose, Calif.-based Antares Microsystems, Inc., "Being able to go straight to layout without drawing a schematic is a real breakthrough. To run simulations today involves a cumbersome process of exporting HDL from schematics, which takes time and can generate errors. To avoid these problems, designs could be created natively in HDL. Schematics have to be hand-drawn to get the netlists needed for layout. Schematic entry is especially difficult with large, high pin-count parts. At Antares, we have to split our complex parts onto multiple schematic pages. With technology like Innoveda's HDL2PCB, we'll be able to eliminate that effort and generate our netlists from HDL, without the time and expense of schematic entry. And, by taking the burden off our engineering team, we'll have more time to refine and improve our own products."

Ken Tepper, senior vice president of engineering and marketing for Innoveda's Product Realization Group, said, "HDL2PCB methodology eases engineers' pain. It overcomes difficulties associated with the complexity of large components in schematic entry - library creation, schematic placement and visualization - and error-prone schematic-to-HDL cycles. At the same time, it can help our customers hold down production costs, save time, and eliminate mistakes that can result in missed project schedules and missed market windows. By using HDL2PCB, they can become design-driven rather than paper-driven as they develop complex PCBs."

How It Works

Innoveda's HDL2PCB design environment provides a path from HDL designs to PCB layout, eliminating problems inherent with graphical representation of large, complex components. For input, it accepts graphical or text-based designs created natively in Verilog or HDL. Design entry done natively in HDL offers a seamless transition to and from simulation without schematic representation or translation. The HDL2PCB design environment bypasses the need to draw schematics that typically is required to get a PCB netlist. HDL2PCB interfaces with Innoveda, Cadence and Mentor PCB layouts and can output EdaXML results. HDL2PCB also enables parametric attributes to be merged from an ODBC database.

Innoveda is actively seeking partnerships with companies to optimize this working technology for use by the general market.
