Tilera Demonstrates the Highest Single-Chip SNORT Performance at 10Gbps

LAS VEGAS, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Apr 29, 2008 -- INTEROP -- Tilera Corporation, developer of the breakthrough TILE™ family of high-performance multicore processors for the embedded market, today announced that it will demonstrate the open source SNORT software running on Tilera's TILE64™ processor and handling 10 gigabits-per-second of network traffic, the highest application performance available on a single-chip, all while consuming less than 20 watts. By comparison, the nearest competitor only runs at 1/3 the performance, handling 3.5 gigabits-per-second of traffic, and consuming over 30 watts of power.

SNORT, an open source application that performs deep packet inspection, is used as a common benchmark to evaluate processor performance and typically requires multiple X86 quad-core processors to perform at a 10-gigabit-per-second rate. Processor performance on SNORT is a critical benchmark for networking equipment providers that are expanding their security to L4 and L7 deep packet inspection, as well as for firewalls, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), intelligent switches and network forensics.

"Deep-packet inspection applications like SNORT are critical to ensuring network security, but such applications require a huge amount of processing capability to run at full capacity," said Rao Gattupalli, Vice President of Applications, Tilera Corporation. "The TILE64's unprecedented 10 gigabits-per-second of performance running SNORT enables network equipment providers to build systems that are more sophisticated and secure than ever before with fewer chips, smaller footprint and lower power consumption."

"Running open source SNORT on the Tilera processor highlights the simplicity that Tilera brings to multicore. Our customers can take their existing code and achieve high performance without changing their code architecture," said Ihab Bishara, Director of Marketing, Tilera Corporation. "By comparison, other multicore vendors require months of code re-architecture in order to leverage their hardware acceleration engines and only reach 3.5 gigabits-per-second on this benchmark."

Tilera has solved the multi-processor scalability problem with general purpose processors, standard programming paradigms, and advanced debugging and optimization tools that can harness the processing power of hundreds of cores on a single chip. Tilera's technology addresses the biggest challenge in today's semiconductor market: offering a general purpose processor that is programmable in standard C and C++, high performance, and low power.
