HP loaned me a brand-spanking new HP xw8600 workstation loaded with dual 64-bit Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processors, 4GB of RAM, a high-end NVIDIA Quadro FX4600 video accelerator, a 320 GB of hard drive, and equipped with an MS Windows XP operating system. I booted up the machine and after being surprised by the lack of any noise --- this is the quietest machine I’ve ever used --- I began my search for a test case that would help me quantify the buzz.

Gauda, Inc. Announces Breakthrough for Accelerating OPC and Verification in 45nm and 32nm Technology Nodes Gauda, Inc. announced today that it has demonstrated a breakthrough technology that can accelerate OPC (optical proximity correction) and OPV (optimal proximity verification) up to 200 times faster than traditional solutions, running on today's desktop computers. Gauda achieves this acceleration without any specialized hardware or FPGAs, but by developing a new breed of algorithms utilizing CPUs and GPUs (graphical processing units) that are traditionally used for gaming. With Gauda technology and approximately 10 all-commodity desktop computers, a large 45nm full-chip layout can be decorated overnight. Similarly, a single desktop computer is sufficient to complete verification overnight.

It is a great article about verification. Finally, I can really say executives at big EDA companies understand the issues. The article addresses reusability across different designs and one design with different representations. Like Java, "write once and run everywhere" is the key factor that increases productivities.
However, are the technologies really new? The answer is no. We (www.tarek.com) have been addressed those issues since 2004.
