This move by Synopsys is not only good for the industry but it demonstrates good corporate citizenship and courage.
Regardless of the genesis of the technology and moral standing of Avant! leadership, the company has developed solid a solid product that has helped the cause of SOC design. If the company failed, the cost to the industry would be enormously burdensome. The acquisition moves the technology into the hands of a company with much higher ethical standards and maintains a healthy level of competition, which can only be good for the suppliers of the technology and their customers.
But the fact that Aart DeGeus was willing to risk so much to keep this technology alive and healthy speaks volumes to me about him and his company. Yes, they bought insurance against litigation, but that insurance won't pay for the man hours that will go into resolviong the morass of legal and technical issue that will arise from the acquisition. Synopsys may only break even on this deal when it all pans out.
And yet, it was the right thing to do for both the EDA and semiconductor industry. We don't often see corporate leaders do the right thing, regardless of the cost.
